Kings try to snap skid in road test with Blue Jackets

12/23/2008 - (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The Los Angeles Kings will try to avoid their fifth consecutive loss tonight when they visit the Columbus Blue Jackets for a battle at Nationwide Arena.

The Kings have lost four straight on the heels of a two-game winning streak and will try to close out a three-game road trip with a win in this evening's contest.

Los Angeles has lost four straight and six of its last seven road tests. The club is just 3-8-0 as the visiting team on the season.

The Kings last played on Saturday in Detroit and were handed a 6-4 setback by the defending Stanley Cup champions. Dan Cleary scored the game-winning goal with 1:34 remaining in the third period to lift Detroit to victory at Joe Louis Arena.

Dustin Brown and Kyle Calder each posted a goal and an assist for the Kings. Jonathan Quick, making just his third career start, allowed five goals on 35 shots in a losing cause. Quick and Jason LaBarbera are splitting goaltending duties while Erik Ersberg recovers from a groin strain.

Next up for LA is a home-and-home series with the Phoenix Coyotes. The Kings will host the opener on Friday before the clubs meet the following day in the desert.

The Blue Jackets are coming off back-to-back losses and received even more bad news on Monday when the club learned star rookie center Derick Brassard will need season-ending surgery to repair a dislocated right shoulder.

Brassard, considered an early front-runner for the Calder Trophy as the league's top rookie, suffered the injury during a first-period fight with Dallas' James Neal in last Thursday's 6-5 loss.

Selected with the sixth overall pick of the 2006 NHL Entry Draft by Columbus, the 21-year-old Brassard has 10 goals and 15 assists in 31 games this season and is currently tied with Chicago's Kris Versteeg for the rookie scoring lead.

Two days after the costly loss to Dallas the Jackets were handed a 2-0 setback in Phoenix. Ilya Bryzgalov turned aside 33 shots to record his sixth career shutout for the Coyotes.

Rookie Steve Mason allowed two goals on 24 shots for Columbus, which has also lost three of its last four games.

Tonight's test is the first of two straight at home for the Blue Jackets, who will also host Philadelphia on Saturday. Columbus is 10-5-1 as the host this year and has won five straight at Nationwide Arena.

LA posted a 3-0 home victory over the Blue Jackets on December 6 and has won two straight in the series after dropping the previous three encounters. The Kings have lost eight of their last 10 tests in Ohio.
